2007 July: Streetgames NYC

We started shooting this documentary in Madison, WI covering the Stoopball of America World Series. Believe it or not, this facility was situated in the middle of a cornfield, the three backstops defined by 8′ high stalks of corn. While taking a large portrait of all the participants, I was coming down off a tall step ladder when a fledgling swooped down and landed on my mattebox. Steve Oakley caught this image of bird and mattebox.

Well, Lars and Matt are editing this documentary (on New York streetgames, by the way). they’ve started a blog to help build audience for this title.

fledgling on mattebox

Pretty interesting, many very passionate rememberers of their childhood streetgames. I personally remember playing softball/baseball in my neighborhood. We were fortunate, lots of kids in the ‘hood and a ballfield at a small private school down the street. summertime was a ball, literally.

Look for this title, New York Streetgames coming summer of 2008.

1981-86 U of SC Columbia, SC

The University of South Carolina’s Columbia Campus is it’s own country within the city limits of Columbia, SC. For three years, it was all that Michael needed. Working toward a bachelor’s of sciences degree in the natural sciences (physical oceanography, 1986), this took Michael and his classmates down to the Belle W. Baruch Institute located on the norther margin of Winyah Bay. Belle W Baruch Inst Labs Besides the academic pursuits, Michael was also involved in Student Activities as the Film Program’s leader. The Student Film Program was the community’s only alternative movie theater in Columbia programming 300 program days (approx 200 films) with a $300K gross annual budget.
